Memphis-Style Coleslaw

There is no side dish more delicious and versatile than a serving of coleslaw. Cool, refreshing, and packing a punch of flavor, Memphis-Style Coleslaw is the perfect accompaniment to almost any dish you are serving at your next barbecue cook out, picnic, or even standard family dinner. Simple and quick, anyone can mix up the dressing and make a perfect coleslaw that is sure to impress with just a few ingredients and minimal effort! No matter what you plan on serving at your next meal, check out this universal side dish that will steal the show and leave everyone satisfied. Let's get cooking!

Today we are keeping things super simple and using one bowl and some store-bought shredded cabbage mix to cut down prep time and dishes. Anyone that wants to peel the skin off their knuckles shredding cabbage and carrots themselves is more than welcome, but once in a while you have to treat yourself and just use premade packaged goods, eh? Spend that extra time focusing on your main course because this Memphis-Style Coleslaw will easily take over as the main attraction if you let your guard down!

In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, mustard, and granulated onion. Once everything is well incorporated, give it a quick taste and add any salt/pepper as you deem necessary. I think a dash of salt is all you need, but no one is going to call the food police if you want to add a little fresh cracked black pepper.

Once you are satisfied with your dressing, simply add in your shredded cabbage mix and toss to combine. When you first make this coleslaw, there should be just enough dressing to evenly coat 16 ounces of slaw mix. I definitely suggest doubling up this recipe and making a bigger batch, but I would limit it at that. As the cabbage sits in the dressing, natural liquids and water will release over time making it become a bit runny after a couple days. You can simply drain off that excess liquid, but you will lose some flavor with it so I think a double batch is sufficient for extra servings. Unless you are feeding a small Army and can serve everything in one meal, I do not recommend tripling this one due to those extra liquids that will release over time. I would estimate you will get 4-6 servings per 16 ounce bag of slaw mix. Make just enough to serve within 2-3 days, essentially.

Once your slaw is thoroughly mixed, cover your bowl and refrigerate it for at least 4-6 hours, but preferably overnight. This will allow enough time to get some of those liquids to release and fortify the flavor, but not become a soupy mess. That's all she wrote, folks! Pull it from the fridge and toss everything again to get those extra liquids redistributed throughout the mixture. Serve a nice little helping of Memphis-Style Coleslaw along side your main course and voila.....a meal fit for a King! This slaw works great as a stand alone, but is perfect for adding to fish tacos or on top of a pulled pork sandwich! It's mild overall, which makes it so versatile to pair with almost any protein, but has enough tang and flavor to make a simple dish explode with more bite. Quick and simple, this coleslaw is sure to add flavor and Instagram-worthy looks to your next meal. Try it for yourself and let me know what your family thought...just keep cooking!
