Southern Banana Pudding

Updated: May 7, 2022

Get your southern accents ready folks because today we are making the best damn banana pudding you ever had! I'm going back to my southern roots, giving a few of momma's secrets away, and delivering the sweetest, most simple, creamy banana pudding that will have you going back for seconds, and maybe even thirds, before enjoying a post meal diabetic coma nap! Is this recipe healthy? Hell naw! Is it hella tasty? You betcha! So pull up those suspenders, relax back in your Lazy Boy recliner, and stick with me as I walk you through this super simple dessert that will have everyone in your family raving about your newfound chef skills! You may want to make a double batch because this one tends to disappear fast so let's get cooking, ya'll!

Like any banana pudding recipe, we will begin by making the pudding, but only better. Instead of following the box instructions and using just plain milk, we are going to up the sweetness and greatness of this pudding by replacing 1 cup of milk with a 16 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk. Am I crazy? Probably, but just trust me on this one because it takes this banana pudding to a whole other level! Mix thoroughly, cover, and refrigerate until the pudding sets up, or overnight if you want to set and forget about it for a while. Once your pudding has thickened and set up, it is time to use momma's secret southern tip! Fold in a container of cool whip topping into the pudding and gently mix until it becomes a smooth consolidated mixture. This little known step really helps smooth out the pudding and add that little extra unknown yum flavor you didn't even know you were missing before! And that is pretty much it, folks.....the rest isn't rocket science by any means. Layer some vanilla wafers, cover with pudding mixture, add a layer of thin sliced banana rounds, and repeat until your pyrex dish or bowl or whatever you decide to use is full. The following pictures should clarify any confusion you shouldn't have at this point, but there is always that one guy after all, eh?

Let the finished banana pudding chill out in the fridge for a few hours to set up and for the vanilla wafers to soften a bit. I recommend making it a day ahead of time, but feel free to experiment and find out the perfect timing for you and your family. Was that all that difficult? Even a semi-trained monkey could probably pull this simple Southern Banana Pudding recipe off. This is also a great one to get your kids involved because in the end, looks don't matter. Everyone will be scooping out a big bowl and woofing it down before you can even get your phone out for those instagram pics! Try it out and let me know what you think. There are a million different versions out there, but this is my take from my southern roots. Enjoy!
